Properties Information
PhytoCAT-ID PhytoCAT-1121
Phytochemical name or plant extracts St. John's Wort extract (SJWE)
PMID 33080824
Literature evidence Our results indicate that SJWE might have great potential as a new anticancer therapy for triple-negative breast cancer by inducing prodeath autophagy and apoptosis.

Other cancers Breast cancer
Target gene or protein Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL
Gene or Protein evidence Consistent with the in vitro study, antiapoptotic proteins, Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, were lowered by SJWE treatment
Target pathways SJWE regulated proliferation and apoptosis in MCF-7 breast cancer cells by inhibiting the AMPK/mTOR and Bcl-2 family pathways. Moreover, SJWE-induced autophagy activation and apoptosis led to the suppression of proliferation through modulation of the PI3K/mTOR pathway in the TNBC line MDA-MB-231 cells.
IC50 NA
Potency Our results indicate that SJWE might have great potential as a new anticancer therapy for triple-negative breast cancer by inducing prodeath autophagy and apoptosis.
Cell line/ mice model MDA-MB-231, MCF-7
Additional information  In numerous clinical double-blind trials against placebo and other antidepressants the whole extract of St.-John's wort, e.g. as in Jarsin coated tablets, has proved to be just as effective as the other antidepressants for mild and moderate depression, but not for severe depression.
