Literature evidence Flaxseed (FS), an oilseed containing high amounts of the phytoestrogen lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), and n-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid-rich oil (FO), has been shown to inhibit the growth of established human breast tumors (MCF-7) in ovariectomized (OVX) athymic mice.
IUPAC name (2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-2-[(2R,3R)-2,3-bis[(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methyl]-4-[(2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxan-2-yl]oxybutoxy]-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol

Target gene or protein ps2, Bcl-2, IGF-1R, ERα, ERbeta, EGFR, Bcl-2 mRNA, PMAPK protein, p65, NF-κB
Gene or Protein evidence SDG alone also lowered the ERalpha, ERbeta, EGFR, BCL2 mRNA, and PMAPK protein, indicating that its effect involves the modulation of the ER- and growth factor receptor-mediated signaling pathways. SDG supplementation in the mice significantly reduced tumor volume and expression of phospho-p65 and NF-κB target genes SDG had a main effect in the reduction of PS2, BCL2, and IGF-1R mRNA expression
