Other cancers Breast cancer
Target gene or protein Tp53, Survivin
Gene or Protein evidence MSP on TP53 promoter with methylated and unmethylated primers showed that, the extract had considerable effects on the methylation status of this gene. Moreover, a noticeable effect on the survivin gene expression was observed, where exposure to the extract was led to a significant decrease in mRNA expression.
Target pathways Cleavage PARP protein, decrease in the mRNA expression levels of bcl-2 and increase expression of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 mRNA, highlights that the induction of apoptosis was the main mechanism of cell death. Moreover the expression study of Caspase-9 mRNA showed that, the extracts have induced apoptosis via intrinsic mitochondrial pathway.
IC50 223 µg/ml against MCF-7
Potency Accordingly, SADCM could be considered as a potential source for production of cancer epi-drugs.
Cell line/ mice model MCF-7, L929
Additional information  The treatment of MCF-7 cells with dichloromethanolic and methanolic extracts of S. atropatana resulted in morphological changes, cytotoxic and apoptotic effect on this tumor cells while there was no significant inhibitory effect on normal cells.
