Phytochemical Name : Punicic acid

Properties Information
PhytoCAT-ID PhytoCAT-1498
Phytochemical name or plant extracts Punicic acid
PMID 20043077
Literature evidence Here we investigated the potential ability of punicic acid to affect growth of both an estrogen insensitive breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-231) and an estrogen sensitive cell line developed from the MDA-MB-231 cells (MDA-ERalpha7).
IUPAC name (9Z,11E,13Z)-octadeca-9,11,13-trienoic acid
Phytochemicals’ class or type of plant extracts Omega-5 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid
Source of phytochemicals or plant Extracts Punica granatum
Geographical availability Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, North Caucasus, Pakistan, Tadzhikistan, Transcaucasus, Turkey, Turkmenistan
Plant parts Seeds
Other cancers Breast cancer, Colon cancer, Prostate cancer
Target gene or protein NA
Gene or Protein evidence NA
Target pathways These results suggest that punicic acid has breast cancer inhibitor properties that are dependent on lipid peroxidation and the PKC pathway.
IC50 NA
Potency Proliferation was inhibited 92 and 96% for MDA-MB-231 and MDA-ERalpha7 cells, respectively compared to untreated cells by 40 microM punicic acid.
Cell line/ mice model MDA-MB-231, MDA-ERalpha7, HepG2, Huh7, HT29 , HCT116, DU145
Additional information  Punicic acid is an omega-5 fatty acid capable of inhibiting breast cancer proliferation. Our results demonstrated that punicic acid and its congeners induce a significant decrease of cell viability for two breast cell lines with a related increase of the cell cycle G0/G1 phase respect to untreated cells.
