Phytochemical Name : Naringenin

Properties Information
PhytoCAT-ID PhytoCAT-347
Phytochemical name or plant extracts Naringenin

Literature evidence By using this system we have identified three natural compounds, apigenin, naringenin and syringic acid which exhibited weak progestational activity and eleven other compounds which exhibited weak antiandrogenic/antiprogestational activity.

Target gene or protein Bax, Bcl-2, MAPK, PI3K, IL-6, Caspase 3, Caspase 9
Gene or Protein evidence Naringenin up-regulated the expression of BAX while decreased the expression of Bcl-2. Naringenin also inhibited the phosphorylation of p44/p42 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Our findings indicate that naringenin inhibits the activity of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). Furthermore, Naringenin exhibited the capacity to suppress the function of IL-6 in modulating apoptosis-associated genes expression. Caspases 3 and 9 were activated by Naringenin, an influence, which was augmented via cyclophosphamide.

IC50 50 μg/ml against MCF-7
Potency Naringenin demonstrated cytotoxicity and inhibited mammosphere and colony formation, migration, and epithelial to mesenchymal transition in the mammosphere. Our study revealed that the relative estrogenic potency of the substances was E2 > genistein > naringenin.

Additional information  Naringenin inhibits glucose uptake in MCF-7 breast cancer cells: a mechanism for impaired cellular proliferation. Thus, naringenin can be an ideal surgical adjuvant therapy for breast cancer patients.
