Phytochemical Name : Eugenol

Properties Information
PhytoCAT-ID PhytoCAT-1190
Phytochemical name or plant extracts Eugenol
PMID 17998642
Literature evidence Investigations in our laboratory have focused on the mechanism of activity of variety of anticancer and antioxidant agents, namely, Eugenol, (EU), Ellagic acid (EA), Triphala (TPL), Tocopherol Succinate (TOS) and Arachidonic acid on normal and cancer cells with view to design effective protocols in practical radioprotection and cancer radiotherapy.
IUPAC name 2-methoxy-4-prop-2-enylphenol
Phytochemicals’ class or type of plant extracts Phenol
Source of phytochemicals or plant Extracts Syzygium aromaticum
Geographical availability Maluku
Plant parts Buds and Leaves
Other cancers Breast cancer, Cervical cancer
Target gene or protein LC3, NUp62, E2F1/survivin
Gene or Protein evidence Eugenol also induced autophagy by upregulating the expression levels of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) and downregulating the expression of nucleoporin 62 (NU p62). The inhibition of cancer cell proliferation is mainly due to the presence of eugenol, a phenolic natural compound which targets E2F1/survivin in cancer cells
Target pathways Eugenol alleviated breast precancerous lesions through HER2/PI3K-AKT pathway-induced cell apoptosis and S-phase arrest.
IC50 8µM against MCF-7
Potency Eugenol is a promising natural anti-cancer agent against triple-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer. Eugenol (which is also present in MO bark) in MDA-MB-231 cell apoptosis by increasing Bax protein expression.
Cell line/ mice model MCF-7, HeLa, MDA-MB-231
Additional information  Eugenol restricts Cancer Stem Cell population by degradation of beta-catenin via N-terminal Ser37 phosphorylation-an in vivo and in vitro experimental evaluation.
