Phytochemical Name : Bergapten (Bg)

Properties Information
PhytoCAT-ID PhytoCAT-1243
Phytochemical name or plant extracts Bergapten (Bg)
PMID 26459431
Literature evidence In both cell lines, Bg blocked glycolysis and significantly decreased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity promoting glucose accumulation, modulated bioenergetic requirements altering the expression of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes and ATP production, and induced a lipid-lowering effect since an increased lipase activity concomitantly to a reduction in triglyceride levels was observed.
IUPAC name 4-methoxyfuro[3,2-g]chromen-7-one
Phytochemicals’ class or type of plant extracts Coumarin
Source of phytochemicals or plant Extracts Ficus carica

Plant parts Leaves
Other cancers Breast cancer
Target gene or protein p53, PTEN
Gene or Protein evidence Evidence that bergapten, independently of its photoactivation, enhances p53 gene expression and induces apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. Our data indicate PTEN as a key target of Bergapten action in breast cancer cells for the induction of autophagy.
Target pathways PTEN is transcriptionally regulated by Bergapten through the involvement of p38MAPK/NF-Y, as evidenced by the use of p38MAPK inhibitor SB203580, site-direct mutagenesis of NF-Y element and NF-Y siRNA.
IC50 NA
Potency NA
Cell line/ mice model MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, ZR75
Additional information  Bg can be used in combination with other forms of targeted chemotherapy to improve cancer treatment outcomes. Bergapten is under investigation in clinical trial NCT00533195 (Comparison of UVA1 Phototherapy Versus Photochemotherapy for Patients With Severe Generalized Atopic Dermatitis).
