Other cancers Breast cancer, Cervical cancer, Neuroblastoma
Target gene or protein p27(kip1), Bax, Bcl-2
Gene or Protein evidence We observed that alpha-lipoic acid is able to scavenge reactive oxygen species in MCF-7 cells and that the reduction of reactive oxygen species is followed by cell growth arrest in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, via the specific inhibition of Akt pathway and the up-regulation of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27(kip1), and by apoptosis, via changes of the ratio of the apoptotic-related protein Bax/Bcl-2.
Target pathways PI3-K/Akt signalling pathway
IC50 NA
Potency NA
Cell line/ mice model MCF-7, SK-N-SH, Hela
Additional information  Alpha-lipoic acid acts as a free radical scavenger and assists in repairing oxidative damage and regenerates endogenous antioxidants, including vitamins C and E and glutathione. This agent also promotes glutathione synthesis. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid exerts metal chelating capacities and functions as a cofactor in various mitochondrial enzyme complexes involved in the decarboxylation of alpha-keto acids.
